Fansubs

I have been spending a lot of time on IRC recently, and other than being the cancer that is killing /b/, I have been on the IRC for gg subs. A couple of weeks back there was a link posted that lead to a thread discussing the youtube subissions of the user "OtaKing77077" or "Otaking" entitled "Anime Fansub Documentary." The videos started off talking about some old fansubs and moved into what fansubing is like today. Most of the video discussed current fansubs, although in the beginning he discussed some old fansubing methods, most of the video is him insulting current groups, pointing out the problems. At first I thought some of the stuff he had problems with he would claim were positive, I was wrong, and as I watched the video I began to agree with him. The two main problems he has with fansubs are the information bits that appear at the top of the screen, and the preserving of certain Japanese words and honorifics in subtitles. The information bits I started watching the video thinking they were good, but his main problem with them was that they distracted the eye, and brought your attention away form what is being said. I was then reminded that the information bits generally piss me off, because I am instead looking at the top and missing what is being said, or not understanding part of what is being said below. Which leads into another one of his arguments, how certain Japanese words are not translated. When i comes to this his main points are, "Why do they leave some honorifics and words, but translate ones that could be deemed equally important?," "Japanese is not a 'sacred' language that has words which are impossible to translate." (Fansubbers being dubbed as 'lazy,' or 'elitist fanboys') "Fansubbing being some elitist group, making it hard for new people to get in" There is more, but he makes some pretty interesting points. He can be regarded as pompous, and his british accent doesn't help with that fact, but if you think about fansub groups, you can see them as being pompous. The thread I was linked to had a the following response in a nutshell "This guy posted these videos about fansubing *links* , his examples are some pretty bad groups, I don't think my fansubing group *namedrop here* does what 90% of his examples do. I don't agree with him, anime is a subculture, a fan thing that you get into and the Japanese is a part of... etc etc." The thing is, that may be true, but even so it prevents a whole lot of casual anime viewers from getting into it, and there are people that think "Oh they are lazy, they should just watch DVDs, or watch it on Cartoon Network," but that is the elitist thinking that causes negative stereotypes, among other things. I know a few people that just occasionally watch anime, and they seem to be a dying breed, forced to either obsess or abandon anime.

One suggestions that I agree with, was that the information bits be put in an accompanying text file, and this would also work for honorifics that fansubers love to keep so much. I agree with some other points he made that I didn't touch upon, like how super imposing translations onto the video doesn't show much respect for the work, fansub groups making their names larger that the name of the anime, and writing the names of the people in the group over the names of the actual artists/workers being very disrespectful.

gg fanubers posted this in their IRC, I believe, because they agreed with it. I think after I saw the video I noticed they did not have information at the top of the screen, and kept Japanese words and honorifics out of the translation. I also believe they agreed with it because later when they were trolling their "ending of Code Geass Translations" (sure it was trolling, but doesn't have to do with the translation), they also had in the update "Long Live Otaking."

Links:
Part 1: http://youtube.com/watch?v=IUYlqLlbix0
Part 2: http://youtube.com/watch?v=yoJ_BWQ9Kow
Part 3: http://youtube.com/watch?v=PFu9lh37X34
Part 4: http://youtube.com/watch?v=E8oYz1dP0-k
Part 5: http://youtube.com/watch?v=ED3HAEjKUl0

^(In short, wasting your time when you could just watch the video and see for yourself)

Me is up stuff with...what is?

Recently I haven't been up to too much, this past week, unless you count Speed Racer on Sunday, and the rest of the day that followed (another story for another time). The past few weeks I had hung out with friends from college, in particular my future roommate Mike, I was in his orientation group and befriended him at the Northeastern University anime club. Two people I have hung out with once, and plan t hang out with more over the summer, is Alex (he lived on my floor and we hung out quite a bit) and Jeff (another anime club friend), I also plan to bother Frankie who is a head of the anime club, and is a cool person to be around. A lot of cool people that I hung out with during college, the thing is that I am back for the summer so no classes, and hardly as many people/opportunities to hang out. I normally go to bed at 6-7AM, sleep until 6-7PM and repeat, unless I have plans for the day, in that case I go to be still pretty late and wake up early. Why do I stay up, you may ask. Well, the answer is simple: All the good TV shows are on at night. WIth nothing to do, that leaves TV, and the good TV is on late. I want to get a job, but I am going to take classes over the summer to improve my GPA, and being able to focus on the subjects when no having others as well. Seems like a lot of people I know are getting internships, some engineers, some not, but they are doing it. I feel like I should have tried to do that, BUT then I remember that I am part of the Co-Op program, and am going to be spending 3 1.5 semesters actually working at places for engineering, places that I could then in turn be hired into right out of college.

What I have done so far:
May 10th Protest: Stop Fair Game
Kaiju Big Battel <-- FINALLY GOT TO SEE IT AND IT WAS FUCKING AMAZING! (also followed the protest so it was a pretty awesome day)
Watched Code Geass season 1 and am caught up on season 2
Started watching One Piece, and am up to ep 63
Started watching Chobits (not sure where I am but probably about halfway)
Got a new DS because Freshman broke my old one.
Playing The World Ends With You (awesome game)
Bought Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Time (but have yet to start it, or even remove the plastic wrap)
Watching Nick at Nite (Home improvement, Fresh Prince, George Lopez, The Cosby Show, Roseanne, a show that I appreciate more now then when I was young and always skipped it, and soon to come Family Matters, a show which I loved when I was younger)
I also started Gantz again, it was one of those things that I didn't look at in awhile, and wasn't sure where I was so I didn't bother, but REALLY wanted to catch up on it, but now that I am reading it again I am happy.

Things I am looking forward to:
Darkrai event at Toys R' Us this weekend
June 15th protest: Sea ARGH!!!
Over 9000 Man March on Washington D.C., July 19th

well well well

well, I finished my first/last final last Wednesday.
I moved out of my dorm on Friday. It was hard to leave after these past two semesters. I had some really great times on my floor, and made friends with some really awesome people. Thanks to dorm life, I feel I have become a better person. There was a lot of drama, mostly annoying to be around, but it was still a part of the experience. I think overall some of my favorite moments was when I pulled all nighters with one or two people, one of which almost always being "Gateway," in the common room we would play games, either together or on our own, and a couple of times we would do homework. Overall it was great, and it was hardly dull.
I was the last, of the people I knew well, to move out from the floor, excluding two people and my RA, the two people had to stay at Northeastern for a few days more, one doing Lax, the other having a later flight, or something like that, and my RA was doing RA stuff. So I left, and now I am back home. Come fall, I will have a much better room since I got into the nice upperclassmen dorms with my new roommate, who I made friends with at the Northeastern Anime Club. Where my room is now, I am probably going to be in a better position to hang out with some of the others I befriended at Anime Club. Things are probably going to be a lot less quiet than that engineering floor I was on, but I am going to try to still hang out with those who I had befriended. I feel there will always be a bond between many of us from what we shared this past school year.

What's up with me?

I printed out my flawed program and handed it in as is, with everything else organized and right. Before that I was at home last night so I could write my college writing 5 page essay without getting easily distracted by my floor (and by not doing it here I was forced to be in a peaceful environment like a library, without being down the road from my distracting dorm), and have my parents make sure I stay awake. I handed that in and the portfolio yesterday(Tuesday).

I am actually done with classes and I have my first/last final today/tomorrow (Wednesday), and I am studying for it right now, and getting distracted too.

When I went home, my mom had already place on the table where I put my laptop, my grandfather's college ring, Northeastern class of 1946. I knew she had it before, but I thought it might be nice to have now, so I asked her if I could wear it, and she said it was okay as long as I was careful with it, which I already knew to be. I essentially am wearing it for luck, and having something like it helps me to relax about my grades/classes. The ring is s small that it only barely fits around my pinky finger, plus part of the loop was dented so it is slightly smaller than it was originally. The design is nice, and it is nice to have something from my grandfather who had gone here way back. He went to Northeastern at nights, since he was working during the day. He was a business major, and hoped to start his own business. Given the time, his goals didn't really work out, and sadly he ended up in an average job, I think at a factory.

Damn C++

As an Engineering major, I need to take a class called computation and problem solving, or something like that. Anywho, it is a class that teaches us basic programming from C++ and matlab, because we all know how much engineers need to work on their programming skills.

Well I have an assignment due tomorrow, and I did the matlab aspect, the base part of the C++, and the "report." There are just two things I need to do that relate to each other, and I have been working on them for TOO DAMN LONG, I've had help from about three different people, who each gave me tips, and yet nothing. I started last night and haven't slept AND I still have to do a 5 page paper also due tomorrow.

>_< never taught C++ aspects were never taught
...yet I still have to recall that knowledge.

DAMN IT ALL!!

A little while back I mentioned that Jonathon Coulton was going going to be performing at Northeastern at Afterhours. I realized recently that it was today, having thought it wasn't this weekend. I should have done better when it came to reminding myself about it, because it was unfortunately was Sunday. Yup, I missed it, the very thing that I thought was so unlikely and probably was, to the point where it won't happen again. And what did I do that resulted in me missing it? Homework? nope. Hanging with friends? nope. I did nothing, absolutely nothing...

Northeastern

Jonathan Coulton, writer of such popular songs as Code Monkey and Still Alive, is going to be performing at Afterhours in Northeatern. I don't know if he is performing in colleges in the area, but I still find it kind of odd that he is going to be performing here, let alone Afterhours, which is essentially a small nightclub wannabe. I guess him being here was bound to happen eventually, since he is from the Northeast, but still... kind of odd/awesome.

I found out this little bit of information during the Northeastern anime club meeting yesterday. We had watched Battle Royale, it was such an awesome movie AND it had one of my favorite Japanese actors Takeshi Kitano, who played Kitano (When I saw him in the movie and I yelled out "Kitano" I later learned I was actually saying the characters name). When one of the heads asked who hadn't seen it, majority of us rose our hands, which was shocking to a bunch of members, since it is recognized as one of the core Otaku films. It was even funnier since all of the people who didn't watch it were in the same half of the classroom, and probably everyone in that half too. Some people didn't seem to like it, but it seemed most of us thought it was awesome. It reminded me a lot of Gantz, but overall tis main focus seemed to be Teenage emotional issues. Another odd/awesome thing that happened was that, probably more or less a week before, I was looking into that film and wanted to see it, unsure about the plot (I like to go into movies hardly knowing anything about the plot, and often enough, none of the plot at all).

Horray! Horray! Today's the day! Today's the day of my Birth...day.
Dropping mad rhymes at the speed of sound yet again! It is my 19th Birthday! (aka one of the more useless ages to be)
Well I am up, and I decided to post this at 2am instead of 12 since I Was told that I was born around then.
Today(or tonight rather) I am going to be able to enjoy MIT anime club, and last year it was NHS anime club. Thanks to a leap year I get two birthdays that happen during anime club meetings.

Also, Happy Birthday Makie (from Negima)

Same year and all...

Well I guess that is it for my birthday post.
Well it is a leap year, so I guess I'll start an Annual Leap Year Post for my LJ.
Happy Birthday Kabuto, although I don't really watch Naruto anymore, and from what I heard the manga is going down south anyways.
Well I don't know anyone born on a leap year, I guess my Leap Year Resolution, will be to meet someone born on a leap year, by next leap year.
and..ummm... The Pirates of Penzance involves a main character who was born on a leap year, and therefore due to an age technicality has to work for pirates longer since he is technically 4 and a half, when at 18 his service would run out.

Well I guess this is it for my post.

Happy Leap Year!

*goes off to play leap frog...or just MIT anime club*

Red Sox Won!

Well the Red Sox won, and being less than a mile away from Fenway, most of the people on my floor (well most of the people in the buildings) headed for Fenway. I got to see people jumping off of traffic lights into crowds, people banging signs together that the took from the ground, and was around when people tried, and failed, to flip a mini cooper, (I didn't get to see it happen specifically, but I saw the crowed gathered around the area). This riot was a lot worse than the one I went to last Sunday (of course). Last Sunday it was mostly girls on people's shoulders in the crowd making out with each other and flashing... it didn't have too much to do with the win. I left before things got serious then. This Sunday I stayed a bit longer, and there were times when I ran, although they did not seem to be necessary given the distance where I was. I found out people flipped a yellow truck, saw it on the news later, and that was when things got serious with the riot squad. I am pretty sure I left with some people on my floor shortly after that, since I think some of them saw it. Walking back we got to see a SWAT truck (I am pretty sure) drive by,and some cop cars. I Didn't see anyone get arrested.

All in all, it was a fun and scary experience. Now I need to go to sleep since I have an 8 AM class.

Go Sox!

My Move in day

To all of those people that I told I was moving into Northeastern on Sept. 2nd:
Well, I lied. Well, Technically I didn't lie. I was supposed to move in on the 2nd, but because of a Disability Orientation (that I don't really need to attend because I already talked with a DRC guy.) my move in day was changed. It was a bit stressing at first, took me a little to find out it was because of the Orientation, and I wasn't sure if I wanted to move in sooner rather than slightly later (wasn't entirely prepared to move at the time).

To all of those people who want to know when my new move in day is:
Well, it is today. I am going to at least move my stuff in, maybe stay tonight, or the weekend, transitioning into me staying there for the semester.

What has been up with me?

Well I got a job at Northeastern running errands in the chemical engineering department. I am going to start next Wednesday because I have orientation Monday and Tuesday. I am going to be working 35 hours a week, Monday-Friday, 8:30-4:30 with a one hour lunch break. It is an awesome job because I get to get used to the campus and environment over the summer, I get paid, I don't have to cashier, and it isn't You-Do-It electronics. I am also looking forward to orientation.
I was mailed a jumble of stuff by Northeastern, among which it told me where my dorm was and who I was rooming with. He is from New York, I am going to hope he is not a Yankee fan (More that he isn't anti Red Sox). "Two 18 year old college roommates start out school, only one is a Red Sox fan, and the other is a Yankee fan. What wacky shenanigans will they get into?" My new sitcom. (I am not really worried about his baseball team preference).

"I need to get out of public schools... oh wait I already am" -Me Earlier Today(Thursday)

Hahaha, so glad that I have graduated. Class of '07, Needham High School. Now I am free from the curse of public education.

Today I went to the Scooper Bowl with some friends, it is an event for the Jimmy Fund, in which there is all you can eat ice cream. I took full advantage of the "all you can eat," aspect, as did many others. I also got to meet some new people through one of my friends that I went with (On the way there we also came across some of our fellow Alumni at Park St station, that were also going, and talked briefly). After we were done with ice cream (I had 15 of the small bowl portions, beating everyone)we went out for some lunch. Indeed, after the icecream we needed some real food. We got some subs and ate them in front of Quincy Market, where we saw a man, by the name of "Lucky Bob," perform. Overall it was a great day.

Mother's Day

Today, well yesterday, was Mother's day. I woke up this morning and wished my mother a happy Mother's Day. She opened the cards my dad and I had given her, and my dad had gone out earlier to get her some flowers and a small box of Russel Stover chocolate. I then was a little stressed because I knew later I would have a good amount of homework to do. I relaxed for a bit, playing my DS, then we went to see my Grandma (Mother's mother) at the care center she is in (Playing my DS on the way). She was in the TV room with some other women watching the musical "South Pacific." The little of the musical that I saw was pretty good, but we didn't stay fort the rest of it. We left around 4, my mom wanted to avoid a minister that would be coming a little later (since the time she said we should go she wanted to avoid him).
We then headed home, and I kept playing my DS (I do that a lot recently). When we got home I made a little something to eat, then started working on my Psych Soc. Article reflections. I had been hoping to get three done before we left again, but I only completed one and even that one delayed our leaving by a little bit.
We then went to my Aunt Lucy's (guess what I did on the way?). There I saw my first Cousin Philip, and his parents (my Aunt and Uncle), as well as my Great Aunt Lucy, and many, many other family members. I talked with my cousin a lot, I don't see him as much as I used to, but I still have a lot of fun being with him. We talked about college, high school, and a bunch of other things, including YouTube. The food was good there, and so was being with the rest of my family, although I was mostly with my Cousin, his parents, and my own, when we were eating. We left the same time as Philip and his parents, and we found out that both of our cars had been egged. This was annoying since my parents had just washed the car before. We noted it as most likely being no good teens, who like to drive around rich neighborhoods (or just neighborhoods, and this one was just part of it), feeling the need to try to ruin things. We discussed the reasoning behind while standing outside of our cars, like when my dad said "They were probably trying to egg Romney's house, and get back at him," to which I responded "Your average eggers aren't that politically active." (Did I mention that Mitt Romney lives right down the road from my Aunt Lucy?). My mom then informed the rest of my family in the house of the event that had taken place.
We headed back home, seeing my Aunt, Uncle, and Cousin, again, while we were driving on the way to the car wash, although they were just going home. Then I went home to do my homework, that I would finish around 2:50-3:00.
Well what my Mother's Day, was like. I am going to go to sleep now. Goodnight.

It's my last night as a free man. That's right ladies, I am now spoken for. World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade comes out tomorrow, and, from what I can tell, I will be getting mine delivered then (I also have a dentist appointment that day, aren't I lucky?). So I shall be spending a lot of time playing it, which is going to be a bad thing since I am going to have a lot fo work to do over the next two weeks, or at least until the end of next weekend.

P.S. I am a total nerd, I know.

Good Day Today

I had to do a project due... well today technically (Wednesday), and it wasn't that bad, I just procrastinated, it was fairly simple... hope I don't fail... but moving on, I watched the two episode season finale of Torchwood today, and it was pretty damn good. There was one plot point I didn't get that I should have been able to piece together from a Doctor Who episode connection, but now I know better. Also Torchwood has not been canceled, and has another season coming up so I am pretty happy since I heard not a lot of people seemed to like it, in England which would be the viewers that they count. I didn't dislike the series, although I saw parts in the beginning that I noted as being most likely stupid, or lame in the eyes of others. The series is pretty good, and has "Captain Jack Harkness" who is just an awesome character played by an awesome actor. I also watched Ouran today, I sadly god hooked during episode three when I had to stop about midway, and I realized later that I really wanted to finish it. Well I should be nodding odd now. Ciao.

P.S. My plans for playing World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade, when it comes out, will soon be revealed on this journal... if I feel like it.

My Holiday Break

Well my break started out as any would, I didn't fully realize I was on break at first. It sunk in, I think, before Christmas came around. I was at my great aunt's house for Christmas eve and got to spend time with my cousin Philip (Church after that, I basically was criticizing, but not because I had to go). Christmas day I got to hang out with him for a bit also, then I went to the celebration on my father's side of the family. I got to speak with Joey, he is a year younger than me and isn't a cousin by blood but is one all the same. I also got to talk with Sawyer, one of my first cousin's sons, and played some video games with him, he is 8. I feel bad because he has severe ADD, which from what I am told seems to be much worse than mine. This is not a good thing, because as you may have already known I had to go through a lot of hard things growing up because of it (which is not limited to people on their high horses). He apparently is taken out of class a lot and has a hard time making friends because of it. I offered his mother, my first cousin, my "Words of wisdom," which I hope can actually be helpful. With that out of the way, I can tell you what I got for Christmas.
Guitar Hero 2 with Red Octane guitar controller (very awesome and addicting game)
Scrubs Season 1 (Awesome show, and I had been watching it before I was typing this, AKA reason why I am still up)
Monty Python Flying Circus Complete series (and now for something completely awesome)
Peace poster sign thing (I put "World Peace" on my list as a joke, I also put in "Don't be cheap with this one" funny thing is the price put on it with the barcode was $4.99)
Money/Giftcards (Always a good thing)
Some good things in the stocking (iTunes giftcard, nice!)
Nintendo Wii IOU (and when I get it everyone will have it *sob*)
Future trip I will be making, and the room for Anime Boston (my friend's parents have the other half handled)
Probably some other things (nice, radical)

What I did after: Nothing that much. D&D group started, and had a second meeting the next day, lots of laughs in those meetings. In between these meetings I had a sleepover at my best friend's house. I had a few rough times with my friend recently, but today... rather yesterday and today I realized why we were friends, and that I shouldn't let some dumb things get in the way. Then the same friend came over. Yesterday (New Years eve) I went to see the ice sculptures in Boston, and got to meet up with Meru and her mother.I missed the 8 foot husky sculpture at Northeastern (the school I got accepted into and will most likely be going to). Well if it isn't destroyed already, or by the end of the day I may see it later today. After that I bought a Wi Fi USB connector for my Nintendo DS, and I bought Elite Beat Agents spontaneously which was worthwhile. It is an awesome game. I then went to my Best Friend's house again for New Years, where we partied and... yeah we were doing nerd things and we watched Mahou Sensei Negima on top of it (awesome show). Well I am going to go to sleep now and hopefully not miss much of tomorrow. Happy New years. Here is 2007, the year that takes me and my fellow Senior classmates out of Needham High School whether we want to or not, which I do want very much so.

Well I'm finally going to sleep

Let's have a hand for Needham high school, and them having school tomorrow... er... today. Well as agitating as having school is, I am more angry that I had to do my math portfolio today, which was annoying to do, but I'm done with it so I don't care as much anymore. Well I finished it a bit after three or something, then I decided to make up my envelope for UMass Amherst, since I learned form a friend the application due date is January 15th, so I figured, like he did, that I bring it in tomorrow. In my case I am bringing it in because it needs to be turned into my guidance counselor two weeks in advance. Although we get back on the second of January, one day after, I think it is better to turn it in sooner, also I won't forget about till over break. Speak of break... I CAN NOW RELAX AND ENJOY THE FACT THAT WE HAVE A WEEK LONG BREAK!!!!!!.... and also presents, and giving.

My Food-day...err...Thanksgiving

Well I went to the Needham Wellesley game, (second longest lasting football rivalry in the US, longest on Thanksgiving, FTW!) we lost 16 to 4 sadly, which sucks because normally it was Needham victories in Needham, and losses at Wellesley, but now the Raiders have two in a row.
I then tried for the $100 xbox 360 core system deal on amazon.com. However thanks to people who came up with programs that did an instant buy, it went out of when I had finally loaded the page less than 10 min after the deal started(the long load also an effect of the program use).
I then went to my cousin's house for Thanksgiving dinner(She's married to a cop, so I needed to be careful :P). I decided to bring my DS, and was thinking of bringing Mario Kart in case one of my younger cousin's had the handheld too, thinking it was a common/commonly like game that one might have it, but seeing as my guesses are never right i just brought Prime. Even if it was Mario Kart I couild do download play. Well guess what, one had a DS lite, and Animal crossing wild word (a game I have). Doesn't really matter to me that much since she was probably in 2nd or 3rd grade. I ate food also who would have thought.

Yesterday: Pep Rally ("Little Busters" -The Pillows), Lack of Wii (who would have guessed?), Super Smash Brothers Melee at my friend's house for most likely 10 hours or more.

My grammar=bad, I knoes but deal with it. :P
